With professional hot-water extraction, carpets are normally dry to the touch within 3 to 6 hours. You can walk on them carefully right away with clean white socks or slippers — just avoid outside shoes or bare feet, as natural skin oils pull dust straight into damp fibres.
The main difference between professional extraction and DIY rental machines is suction power. Commercial extraction wands use strong vacuum motors to pull almost all the injected moisture right back out, leaving the pile slightly damp rather than soaking wet.
